Zhenjiang shipyard inks for 8 deep-water anchor operation batch offshore engineering vessels and the world’s largest tonnage sulfur transport vessel

On May 27, 2025, Zhenjiang Shipyard signed a contract with Singaporean shipowner Britoil Offshore Services Pte. Ltd. for the construction of 6 deep-water anchor-handling offshore engineering vessels, each measuring 45 meters. The contract contains options to build an additional two vessels. The two parties held a signing ceremony to mark the successful agreement.

This project adopted a global bidding method, involving shipyards in China, Malaysia, India, Vietnam and Indonesia. Eventually, Zhenjiang shipyard was recognized by the shipowner through a comprehensive assessment of technical capabilities, cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

According to the owner OSV, these 45-m, 80-tonne+ bollard pull AHTs will be fit for purpose and specifically designed to meet the demanding conditions of offshore work, with enhanced propulsion systems, refined hull designs and increased fuel-carrying capacities.

OSV currently operates a diverse offshore support fleet exceeding 60 vessels, comprising approximately 21 anchor handling tugs (AHTs), 27 anchor handling tug supply vessels (AHTS), along with 14 platform supply vessels (PSVs) and multi-purpose supply vessels.

On the same day, a contract was signed with ADNOC of the United Arab Emirates for one of the world’s largest 11K deadweight ton sulfur transport vessels.

Zhenjiang shipyard has become the “First in China” of 61 projects in special engineering vessel manufacture. In terms of tug manufacturing volume, the company has become the first domestically with a 70% market share of multifunctional ASD tugs in China and other product range expanding daily. In 2020, the factory was rated as “National Manufacturing Single Champion Product” by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and in 2024, the factory was ranked and rated as “National Manufacturing Single Champion Enterprise”. The total number of multi-purpose Marine engineering ships has reached nearly 100, reaching the world’s advanced level in aspects of power design, functional configuration, environmental protection, energy saving, stability and maneuverability.

According to the official website, Zhenjiang Shipyard was established on May 25, 1951. It is the first shipbuilding enterprise in Jiangsu Province and the first high-tech shipbuilding enterprise after re-certification. In 2003, Zhenjiang Shipyard moved to the east side of Jiangsu Runyang Highway Bridge and completed the restructuring in 2004. It now has five wholly-owned subsidiaries, including Jiangsu Lan Bo Shipbuilding Co. Ltd and Zhenjiang Lan Bo Ship Design Co., Ltd etc, as well as one domestic shareholding subsidiary and one dock factory.

Currently, Zhenjiang Shipyard covers an area of about 500,000m2 and possesses a coastal line as long as 700 meters. Being equipped with three slipways, one 80,000 DWT, one 20,000 DWT and one 5,000 DWT, the yard also boasts two fixed quays and one outfitting dock. The maximum lifting capacity of the DWT is 600 tons. With a total reach of 1200 meters, the quay is also featured by a maximum lifting capacity of 30 tons. The company is a technically advanced ship builder and the manufacturing process is split into three units, hull manufacturing, outfitting and paint coating. With an area of 100,000m2 of indoor workshops and over 1300 pieces of equipment, it is a completely integrated manufacturing facility which includes design, manufacture and management of all aspects of approvals and quality assurance.
