South Korean subsea cable contractor LS Marine Solution has announced plans to build one of the “world’s largest” cable laying vessels (CLVs), which is expected to be put into operation in the first half of 2028.
LS Marine Solution will invest $252 million in a 13,000-ton cable laying vessel, according to a May 27 filing with the stock exchange.
It is claimed that the vessel will be among the top five in the world in terms of cable loading capacity and will be the largest cable laying vessel in Asia. No shipbuilder has yet been selected.
The new vessel will be suitable for laying both high-voltage DC submarine cables and fiber optic cables, and will have advanced specifications currently available on only three vessels of its kind in the world.
LS Marine Solution stated that the move is aimed at securing more large-scale high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and offshore wind projects and positioning itself as a global turnkey project provider in partnership with LS Cable & System.
