Jiangsu Ocean Shipping Expands Fleet with 7+3 Green Container Ships in Dual Shipyard Deals

On May 28, Jiangsu Ocean Shipping (Group) Company of Jiangsu Port Group and Jiangsu Soho Chuangke Shipbuilding held a signing ceremony for the construction contract of 3+1 3000TEU container ships. And Jiangsu Ocean Shipping also held a signing ceremony for the construction contract of 4+2 1900TEU container ships with CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding.

It is understood that 3000TEU container ship is the second generation of green energy-saving and environment-friendly container ship of Chittagong type newly developed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI).The ship has an overall length of 185.9 meters, a speed of 19 knots and is seaworthy in unlimited navigation area. It adopts S-Bow low resistance line type, CFD optimization and high-efficiency rudder + energy-saving conduit design, which significantly reduces fuel consumption and carbon emission.

This ship type has achieved all-round breakthroughs in green environmental protection, meeting the IMO Tier Ⅲ emission standards, equipped with a scrubbing system, USCG ballast water treatment and AMP system, and EEDI reaching the Phase Ⅲ requirements, achieving a balance between high efficiency energy saving and ecological protection. This is also an important measure for Jiangsu Soho Chuangke Shipbuilding to actively explore new areas of ship types such as container ships and new energy ships in accordance with the requirements of the holding group, based on the traditional 63,500 DWT bulk carriers, 50,000 DWT tankers and various offshore engineering ship businesses.

According to previous reports, Jiangsu Soho Chuangke Shipbuilding also built four 63,500 DWT ultra-flexible bulk carriers for Jiangsu Ocean Shipping. The order was signed last year. In July 2024, Jiangsu Ocean Shipping and Guoyin Financial Leasing placed an order for eight 64,000 DWT bulk carriers at Jiangsu Soho Chuangke Shipbuilding.

This signing is another achievement of the deepening cooperation and win-win cooperation between Jiangsu Port Group and SOHO Holdings Group, two provincial enterprises. The two parties will take this signing as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation, build a long-term cooperation mechanism, and achieve the upgrade from a single shipbuilding to a multi-faceted strategic partnership.

Data shows that Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding currently holds order book for more than 100 ships, of which nearly 50% of the order book for feeder container ships. It is reported that since the beginning of this year, Huangpu Wenchong has received four 1,900TEU feeder containerships from German shipowner Elbdeich Reederei, two 9,200TEU containerships from Greek shipowner Danaos Corporation, and four 3,100TEU feeder containerships from Turkish shipowner Arkas Holding.

According to public information, Jiangsu Ocean Shipping has total assets exceeding RMB 7 billion (approximately US$973 million) and owns 21 wholly-owned, controlling and equity-holding enterprises. The company controls 118 ships with a capacity of 1.82 million deadweight tons and 33,000 TEUs, including 22 self-owned bulk cargo ships with a deadweight tonnage of 1.31 million deadweight tons and 13 self-owned container ships with a deadweight tonnage of 200,000 deadweight tons and 16,000 TEUs. The company operates 64 container routes, including 14 foreign trade trunk lines, 6 domestic trade trunk lines, 14 coastal and river feeder lines and 30 canal feeder lines. The shipping area covers more than 1,000 ports in more than 100 countries and regions in the world. After the delivery of the two batches of container ships, the company will add more than 20,000 TEUs of container capacity.
