Indonesia’s Jhonlin Group Orders 8 Ultramax Bulk Carriers from Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding

The Jhonlin Group, controlled by Indonesian mining giant Samsudin Andi Arsyad, has placed an order for eight Ultramaxes bulk carriers through its subsidiaries.

Jhonlin Marine Lines (JML), a subsidiary of the Jhonlin Group, has signed a contract with Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding for the construction of eight 64,000 dwt Ultramaxes bulk carriers, according to Trade Winds.

Each vessel will cost $41 million, with a total value of about $328 million, and is expected to be delivered in 2028 and 2029, the report said.

This is the second newbuilding order that Oshima Shipbuilding has made public this year. In January this year, China’s Taiwan-based U-Ming Marine returned to Oshima Shipbuilding to order two Ultramaxes bulk carriers, which is another shipbuilding collaboration between the two companies after 2019 and is scheduled for delivery in 2028.

Together with the eight newbuildings disclosed here, Oshima Shipbuilding has received 10 Ultramaxes bulk carriers this year. The shipyard currently holds order books for about 100 vessels, covering the full range of bulk carriers from Kamsarmax to Ultramax.

According to the official website, Oshima Shipbuilding was established in 1973 with 1,644 employees (as of March 2024) and is operated as a joint venture between Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Osaka Shipbuilding and Sumitomo Corporation.
