BV Grants AIP to CSSC 704 Research Institute’s Fuel-Saving Rotor Sail at Shanghai Maritime

At the 2025 Shanghai Maritime, Bureau Veritas (BV) formally awarded the Approval in Principle (AIP) certificate for the Rotor Sail to CSSC 704 Research Institute and its affiliated Shanghai Ship And Shipping Research Institute and Shanghai Hunter Marine Equipment.

This certified rotor sail stands as a true marvel of “Made in China” innovation. Unlike traditional sails, it is a smart rotating cylinder mounted on the ship’s deck, which generates strong propulsion by leveraging the classic Magnus effect. It can help ships reduce fuel consumption by up to 30% and achieve significant carbon emission cuts.

Most importantly, it is currently the only rotor sail brand in China with full independent intellectual property rights that has obtained classification society certification, marking China’s leading position in the global race for green shipping technology.
