Qingshan Shipyard Resumes Shipbuilding with Orders Booked Through 2030

In 2026, the 76-year-old Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard—part of the China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group—resumed shipbuilding operations after an eight-year hiatus. The first vessel built by the shipyard was successfully launched this September, and the facility’s production schedule is now booked through 2030.

From January to August of this year, the total output value of the shipbuilding industry in Wuhan’s Qingshan District grew by nearly 50% year-on-year, with the Qingshan Shipyard alone recording a 2,400% year-on-year increase. The local government has set a target for the district’s shipbuilding industry to reach an output value of 10 billion yuan by 2027.

The shipyard, which has set multiple industry firsts, now presents a renewed product portfolio: while focusing on feeder container ships and multi-purpose vessels, it is expanding into the special-purpose vessel market below 50,000 DWT.

Qingdao Shipyard is currently constructing over 40,000 square meters of new production facilities while renovating more than 70,000 square meters of existing structures, with the goal of creating the largest intelligent workshop for block construction in Central China.

Currently, Qingshan Shipyard has more than 30 active shipbuilding orders, with several multi-purpose vessels under construction simultaneously. The company’s order backlog and prospective orders under negotiation are expected to exceed 10 billion yuan this year.
