ClassNK issues AiP for 13,000 m3 LPG Carrier developed by CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding

ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for “13,000m³ LPG Carrier” by CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and a certificate handover ceremony was held in Marintec China 2025.

For this project, ClassNK reviewed multiple fundamental drawings related to hull structure, stability, machinery and electrical systems, and the cargo handling system. Based on its assessment in accordance with relevant international standards and the guidelines, ClassNK confirmed that the design concept meets the required technical criteria, leading to the issuance of this AiP.

In 2021, before specific international standards for using ammonia as a marine fuel were established, ClassNK published the “Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels” to support pioneering initiatives in this field. These guidelines specify requirements for installation, control systems, safety devices, and other aspects, aiming to minimize risks to ships, crew, and the environment associated with ammonia fuel use.

Furthermore, in 2024, ClassNK submitted the safety requirements proposal “Interim Safety Guidelines for the Use of Ammonia as a Marine Fuel” to the IMO through the Japanese government. This proposal was adopted at the 109th session of the Marine Safety Committee (MSC).

ClassNK will continue to contribute to new technology development and social implementation, including safety assessments.
