“Blue Ocean Shield” Methanol Dual-Fuel Burner Secures World’s First CCS Type Approval, Breaking Foreign Monopoly

Recently, Nantong Ocean Ship Equipment/COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Technology (Weihai) (CHIT) officially unveiled the “Blue Ocean Shield” methanol dual-fuel burner and successfully obtained the world’s first type approval certificate for this product from the China Classification Society (CCS). The company successfully obtained the world’s first type approval certificate for this product issued by CCS, marking another significant breakthrough by Nantong Ocean Ship Equipment/CHIT has achieved another significant breakthrough in the field of key equipment for methanol-powered vessels.

The first domestically designed “Blue Ocean Shield” methanol dual-fuel boiler system is scheduled for deployment in 2026 on the 325,000 DWT series of ore carriers being constructed by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou). This marks the technology’s official entry into the engineering application phase.

Blue Ocean Shield Methanol Dual-Fuel Burner Receives CCS Type Approval

Mr. Duan Yanren, Deputy General Manager of CCS Qingdao Branch, presented the “Blue Ocean Shield” methanol dual-fuel burner type approval certificate to Mr. Chen Xinrong, General Manager of Nantong Ocean Ship Equipment/CHIT. Mr. Duan Yanren highly commended the technical capabilities and innovative value of the “Bule Ocean Shield” burner.

Integrating multiple technological innovations

The newly released “Blue Ocean Shield” methanol dual-fuel burner integrates multiple technological innovations, offering significant advantages such as safety and reliability, wide load adjustment range, compact structure, strong fuel adaptability, and low operating risk. Specifically designed for the characteristics of methanol fuel, the accompanying boiler system innovatively employs a “water + nitrogen” dual-purge mechanism, combined with a skid-mounted, pressure-maintained methanol supply unit, further enhancing system safety and environmental adaptability.

Successfully breaking the long-standing foreign monopoly

For a long time, the core technologies of marine boiler burners have been monopolized by a handful of foreign enterprises, which has constrained the independent development of China’s related industries. To break through this technical barrier, Nantong Ocean Ship Equipment/CHIT actively responded to the national marine equipment development strategy and the group’s green development initiatives, and officially launched the independent R&D project of the “Blue Ocean Shield” marine methanol dual-fuel boiler in 2024.

Looking forward, Nantong Ocean Ship Equipment/CHIT will continue to embrace innovation-driven development, deepen its commitment to the green marine equipment sector, and fully support the implementation of COSCO SHIPPING Group’s green strategy. The company will contribute more “Blue Ocean Shield” solutions to advance sustainable development in the global shipping industry.
