Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Secures Order for 11 Bulk Carriers from Japan’s Nissen Kaiun

Tsuneishi Group (Zhoushan) Shipbuilding (Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding) has secured an order for 11 bulk carriers, scheduled for delivery between June 2027 and October 2028.

The order for these 11 new vessels comes from Japanese shipowner Nissen Kaiun. Each new vessel will measure 229 meters in length, 38 meters in beam, and have a deadweight tonnage of 94,887 tons.

It is worth noting that Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding has collaborated with Nissen Kaiun on multiple occasions. Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding previously constructed 42,000 DWT bulk carriers and 1,900 TEU feeder container vessels for the latter.

As one of Japan’s largest privately owned shipping companies, Nissen Kaiun operates a fleet exceeding 200 vessels, consisting of various vessel types including gas carriers, oil tankers, bulk carriers and container vessels.

This year, Nissen Kaiun has been relatively active in the newbuilding market, announcing new orders across bulk carriers, tankers, and gas carriers. Aside from the 11 bulk carriers contracted by Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, the remaining newbuildings are primarily being constructed by Korean shipbuilders.

According to incomplete statistics, excluding bulk orders from Nissen Kaiun, Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding has also secured an order this year for one 63,300 DWT bulk carrier from Seacon Shipping Group. The vessel is valued at $38.34 million and is scheduled for delivery on April 30, 2027.

Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding was established in March 2003 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tsuneishi Holdings in China under the Tsuneishi Group. In March 2025, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding completed its capital injection into Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, marking the company’s transition from a Japanese-owned enterprise to a Sino-Japanese joint venture.

Public records indicate that currently, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and Tsuneishi Holdings hold stakes of 34% and 66%, respectively, in Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding. Their subscribed capital contributions amount to US$37,815,984 and US$73,407,500, respectively.

Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding primarily constructs bulk carriers, container vessels, and product tankers ranging from 30,000 to 100,000 deadweight tons. To date, the shipyard has completed over 280 vessels of various types. It operates two 80,000-ton slipways, one 80,000-ton dry dock, two 80,000-ton outfitting piers, and one 3,000-ton cargo handling pier.

To expand production capacity and further shorten shipbuilding cycles, Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding invested in a 3,000-ton floating crane and two 700-ton gantry cranes in early 2009, boosting annual production capacity to approximately 25 vessels of 50,000 to 80,000 DWT.
