COSCO SHIPPING Yards Receive DNV Certifications for Innovative FLNG Design

DNV has awarded COSCO SHIPPING (Qidong) Offshore and COSCO SHIPPING Shipyard (Nantong) a Main Scantling Approval (MSA) and Approval in Principle (AiP) for their floating LNG liquefaction and storage unit (FLNG) design. The certifications validate the structural integrity and operational feasibility of the concept, positioning it as a promising solution in the growing floating LNG market.

The MSA confirms the robustness of critical structural components, while the AiP assesses stability, marine systems, electrical configurations, and safety measures. This dual certification helps mitigate technical risks early in the project lifecycle, facilitating smoother progression to the next development phase.

Industry Expertise Meets Innovation

Qu Ming, General Manager of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Qidong) and COSCO SHIPPING Shipyard (Nantong), highlighted the company’s strategic expansion into the FLNG sector, leveraging its extensive experience in FPSO construction. The newly developed near-shore FLNG hull design emphasizes scalability and construction efficiency, enabling faster project turnaround and cost savings for clients.

“We appreciate DNV’s technical guidance and authoritative certification, which have been instrumental in advancing our FLNG capabilities,” Qu stated. “This collaboration has not only enriched our technical expertise but also established a foundation for future performance enhancements and project optimizations.”

Driving the Energy Transition Forward

Norbert Kray, DNV Regional Manager for Greater China, emphasized the project’s alignment with global decarbonization trends. “This FLNG concept exemplifies the industry’s shift toward flexible, low-carbon energy solutions,” he said. “By applying DNV’s rigorous standards, we aim to bolster industry confidence and accelerate the adoption of offshore LNG production technologies.”

The certifications mark a significant milestone for COSCO SHIPPING’s FLNG ambitions, reinforcing its competitive position in the offshore energy market. As demand for floating LNG solutions grows, the collaboration between DNV and COSCO SHIPPING is expected to pave the way for more efficient and sustainable energy infrastructure.
