ZPMC to Retrofit Shanghai Salvage’s Crane Vessel with Deepwater Pipe-Laying System

On December 31st, Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery (ZPMC) and the Shanghai Salvage Bureau held a signing ceremony for a project to retrofit the pipe-laying system of a self-propelled, full-circle slewing crane vessel. Li Zewe, Director of the Shanghai Salvage Bureau, Lu Wei, Deputy Director, and Yu Ruikai, Party Secretary and Chairman of ZPMC, Zhu Xiaohuai, Deputy Party Secretary and President, and Zhang Jian, Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee and Vice President, attended the ceremony.

The renovation of the pipe-laying system of M/V Chuangli constitutes a key component of the “Three Construction and One Renovation” project launched by Shanghai Salvage Bureau in 2025. The signing of this project will further enhance the equipment strength and core competitiveness of Shanghai Salvage Bureau. It is hoped that all parties will continue to deepen the integration of advantages and communication, further strengthen cooperation in such fields as scientific and technological R&D, equipment innovation and talent cultivation, and jointly contribute to accelerating the construction of a transportation power.

ZPMC stated that it will earnestly implement the new strategies and deployments of China Communications Construction Group (CCCC) in the new era, accelerate the development of high-end, intelligent, green, and internationalized operations, expedite the construction of a modern industrial system, and fully develop new productive forces. It will comprehensively enhance its integrated equipment manufacturing and service capabilities, adhere to a customer-centric approach, meet customer needs, and create value for customers. It will also strive to ensure high-quality project execution, further deepen cooperation in multiple fields, and work together to make new contributions to high-quality economic and social development.

The Chuangli is a self-propelled, fully rotating crane vessel equipped with DP3 dynamic positioning and anchor-handling capabilities. A stern-mounted crane with a fixed capacity of 4,500 tons and a fully rotating capacity of 3,500 tons is installed at the stern.

The upgraded S-lay pipe-laying system contracted in this agreement will be provided by ZPMC as a complete pipe-laying solution. Upon completion, it will become China’s first crane-equipped pipe-laying vessel utilizing a fully domestically produced pipe-supporting frame solution, capable of laying pipes at depths up to 3,000 meters. Additionally, it will efficiently execute critical emergency response tasks such as repairing damaged deep-sea oil and gas pipelines, precisely deploying deepwater oil spill containment devices, and accurately maneuvering pipelines/cables during large-scale salvage operations.

The implementation of the pipeline-laying system upgrade project for the Chuangli vessel will further enhance Shanghai Salvage’s capabilities in deepwater pipeline laying and emergency salvage operations, injecting new momentum into China’s marine economic development.
