On May 30, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), the intermediate holding company for HD Hyundai Group’s shipbuilding business, announced that it had secured an order worth 386.8 billion won (approximately US$280 million) to build two container ships for a customer in the Oceania region.
The new ships will be built by HD Hyundai Samho, a subsidiary of HD KSOE. The price of a single ship is US$140 million, with deliveries scheduled in phases before March 2028.
HD KSOE did not release detailed order information. According to industry sources, the new ship will be 8,400TEU in size and the owner will be Capital Group, led by Greek shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis.
In the past two months, Capital Group has placed orders for more than 10 container ships in South Korea. According to Alphaliner, the Greek shipping company previously ordered four 8,000+TEU container ships from HD Hyundai, and also signed contracts for 14 2,800TEU and 1,800TEU feeder ships. With this new deal, Capital’s order volume at HD Hyundai has reached 20 ships.
With its latest orders, HD KSOE has secured contracts for 57 ships worth US$6.98 billion this year, achieving 38.7% of its annual order target of US$18.05 billion.
In terms of ship type, the fleet includes 1 LNG carrier, 6 LNG bunkering vessels, 6 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)/ammonia carriers, 2 ethane carriers, 36 container ships, and 6 oil tankers.
