On September 14, Shanghai Jiao Tong University issued the “Announcement on the Results of the Tender for the Construction of the Deep-Sea All-Weather Floating Research Facility Platform Project.” The announcement stated that Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding was awarded the contract for the project, with a contract value of 2.763 billion yuan (approximately $412 million).
According to the tender announcement, the Deep-Sea All-Weather Floating Research Facility is a major national scientific and technological infrastructure project undertaken by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The core of this facility is a large, self-propelled offshore scientific research platform—the first of its kind globally. Capable of withstanding extreme sea conditions and maintaining long-term presence in the open ocean, the platform offers rapid mobility and deployment. It supports operations in high sea states and survival in extreme conditions, serving as an offshore research base for frontier studies in marine science, marine equipment, and marine meteorology. It establishes capabilities for continuous, full-depth in-situ observation in marine science and full-scale testing in marine engineering, thereby providing a platform for cutting-edge research at the limits of marine science and engineering.
Upon completion, the platform will be classed by CCS (China Classification Society), with technical design provided by the Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) under the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
