Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering Secures 15 Handysize Bulk Carrier Orders

Chinese shipbuilder Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering) has announced orders for more than 10 new bulk carriers, further strengthening its order backlog.

According to TradeWinds, Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering has secured 15 new Handysize bulk carrier orders, continuing its recent momentum in securing new orders, with a total value of approximately $450 million.

Clarksons data shows that the bulk carriers in this batch have a deadweight tonnage of 40,500 tons. The first eight vessels are expected to be delivered in 2029, while the remaining seven are scheduled for delivery in 2030.

The shipowner details and construction costs for this order have not yet been disclosed. Based on recent contracts signed by Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering with other shipowners for the construction of Handysize bulk carriers, the cost per vessel is approximately $30 million. Based on this estimate, the total value of the 15 new vessels is approximately $450 million (equivalent to approximately 3.1 billion yuan).

Recently, Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering has seen strong growth in orders for new bulk carriers. Since September 2025, the company has publicly announced at least 19 bulk carriers, and with the 15 most recently disclosed vessels, the total now stands at at least 34. This includes 25 Handysize bulk carriers and 9 Ultramax bulk carriers, with capacities ranging from 40,000 to 64,500 deadweight tons.

In addition to the 15 vessels mentioned above, the shipbuilder’s most recent announcement of new orders came in April of this year, when Hong Kong-based dry bulk carrier and Pacific Basin Shipping, a Hong Kong-based dry bulk shipowner and operator, placed an additional order for two 40,000 DWT Handysize bulk carriers, bringing the total number of vessels of this type under construction between the two parties to six. The first four vessels were ordered in December 2025, with the total value of the six vessels nearing $180 million, and delivery scheduled to continue through the second half of 2028.

It is worth noting that the four new vessels Pacific Basin Shipping ordered from Jiangmen Nanyang Shipbuilding last year marked the first time in 11 years that the shipping company had placed an order with a Chinese shipyard; previously, the company had preferred to work with Japanese shipyards.

According to the official WeChat account of Jiangmen Nanyang Ship Engineering, the shipyard was established in early 2005 and is located on the shores of Yinzhou Lake in Xinhui District, Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province. It comprises two campuses with a total workshop area of 140,000 square meters. The facility is capable of building vessels of up to 100,000 tons, with an annual production capacity of 1.6 million deadweight tons. Specializing in the construction of handy-size bulk carriers, the shipyard has delivered approximately 170 vessels to date.
