On December 31, Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding successfully launched the 740TEU pure electric open-top container ship Ningyuan Dianpeng. This vessel is the second of its kind—the world’s largest 10,000-ton pure electric high-end intelligent ocean-going vessel—custom-built by Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding for Ningbo Ocean Shipping.

This represents another milestone in the serial construction of vessels following its sister vessel of the same class, Ningyuan Diankun, marking a leapfrog development of Jiangxin Shipbuilding in the field of green and intelligent vessels—from “initial breakthrough” to “serial mass production”.
On September 29, 2025, the first vessel, the “Ningyuan Diankun”, was successfully launched. Interior construction has been completed, and it is poised to enter sea trials. The successful launch of the “Ningyuan Dianpeng” means that both of the world’s largest ten-thousand-ton class all-electric vessels have now entered the subsequent commissioning phase.
This type of vessel is a benchmark product that combines large carrying capacity, zero emissions, and intelligent features. It has an overall length of 127.8 meters, a beam of 21.6 meters, and a depth of 10.5 meters, and features a twin-engine, twin-propeller propulsion system, achieving a maximum speed of 11.5 knots. The vessel features 742 standard 20-foot container slots with a deadweight tonnage exceeding 9,000 tons.

In terms of green power, the vessel is equipped with 10 containerized battery packs (with a total capacity of approximately 19,000 kilowatt-hours), innovatively adopting a dual mode of high-voltage shore power charging and rapid battery swapping, achieving zero emissions throughout its operation and during berthing and cargo handling. In terms of intelligent operation and maintenance, it integrates advanced facilities such as an intelligent integrated platform and intelligent engine room, possessing intelligent functions such as real-time ship-around view, autonomous collision avoidance, and remote control, combining environmental protection, efficient transportation and intelligent operation and maintenance.
As a benchmark product in China’s coastal shipping sector, the serial construction and launch of this type of vessel marks the official entry of China’s coastal container ship operations into a new era of “zero emissions and pure electric power”. It provides a replicable and scalable practical model for the green and low-carbon transformation of the shipping industry, and is of landmark significance for deeply implementing the national “dual carbon” strategy and promoting the high-quality, green, and zero-carbon development of China’s shipping industry.
