China’s First Offshore Crane AI Health Monitoring System Earns ABS AIP at China Maritime 2025

On December 2, the opening day of the 2025 China Maritime Exhibition, the SMART System—an intelligent health monitoring system for offshore cranes developed by CSSC Wuhan Marine Machinery Plant (WMMP)—received ABS’s Approval in Principle (AIP) for SMART (MHM TIER 2). This marks the first domestic offshore crane system to successfully obtain this AIP certification. Gu Hai, ABS Vice President of Technology, and Hu Faguo, Deputy General Manager of WMMP, attended the certification ceremony.

The WMMP SMART system for offshore cranes uses an artificial intelligence algorithm model built on high-precision sensors and historical data of the offshore crane as its carrier. It monitors the health status of the crane in real time, accurately identifies the faulty parts, locations, and types when a fault occurs, and provides crane operators with quick troubleshooting solutions and operation guidelines, effectively ensuring the operating efficiency and safety of the crane.

As an application of WMMP’s intelligent technology, the offshore crane SMART system represents another major breakthrough for the company in the field of intelligent innovation for marine engineering equipment. It holds significant importance for enhancing the core competitiveness of the company’s crane products and supporting the differentiated competitiveness of products such as self-elevating support platforms.

WMMP stated that it will continue to pursue innovation-driven development, closely follow the intelligent transformation trends in the marine and offshore industries, accelerate the industrialization of its SMART system for offshore cranes, promote more domestically produced intelligent equipment into global markets, and contribute to the intelligent, safe, and efficient development of the marine and offshore engineering sector.
