Huangpu Wenchong Signs Contract with KMTC for Six 3,100 TEU Container Ships

On October 26, CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, in collaboration with China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd. (CSTC), officially signed a contract in Guangzhou with South Korea’s Korea Marine Transport Co., Ltd. (KMTC) for the construction of six 3,100 TEU container ships.

The vessels in this order are of the “Honghu” (Swan) class—a 3100 TEU container ship design independently developed by Huangpu Wenchong. Since its market launch in 2020, this design has secured bulk orders from over 20 domestic and international clients. For this specific project, the design has been further upgraded and optimized to meet KMTC’s operational requirements, resulting in a more economical and flexible vessel with broader, highly versatile applicability.

KMTC is one of South Korea’s largest container shipping companies, with a long-standing focus on intra-Asian shipping routes. Previously, the company had primarily placed its new shipbuilding orders with shipyards in South Korea. This agreement marks the first time KMTC has placed an order with the CSSC Group, as well as the first time it has commissioned the construction of new vessels at a Chinese shipyard—a development that serves as a significant milestone.

Just a few days ago, Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding announced another landmark “first” order: a contract to build two 1,900 TEU “Honghu”-class container ships for Vietnam’s HAI AN TRANSPORT & STEVEDORING JSC. This agreement also marks the first-ever collaboration between Huangpu Wenchong and this shipowner.

Currently, Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding has established series production lines for feeder container ships in various capacities—including 1,100 TEU, 1,500 TEU, 1,900 TEU, 2,700 TEU, 3,000 TEU, and 3,400 TEU—with its “Honghu” class feeder container ships (1,900 TEU and 3,000 TEU models) serving as the shipbuilder’s “star” products.
