After years of absence, Turkish shipping giant Ciner Group has re-entered the container ship market by placing an order for new ships with a highly favored Chinese shipyard.
Industry sources report that Ciner Group has signed a contract with New Dayang Shipyard for two 3,100 TEU container ships, each valued at approximately $44 million. Delivery is scheduled for late 2027.
Although further details have yet to be disclosed, sources indicate that the new ships will be conventional container ships designed for regional and intra-Asia routes.
It is reported that Ciner Group previously operated four 9,030 TEU Post-Panamax container ships from 2015 to 2016, gaining experience in container shipping. These ships were initially chartered to Hanjin Shipping until the company’s bankruptcy, after which the entire fleet was sold in 2021, marking Ciner’s exit from the container shipping business.
Since then, Ciner Group has focused on bulk carrier operations and has repeatedly placed orders for Ultramax bulk carriers with New Dayang Shipyard, becoming a regular customer of the shipbuilder. The most recent bulk carrier order was placed in early 2024, with New Dayang Shipyard responsible for constructing and delivering four Crown 63 PLUS bulk carriers.
