Hudong-Zhonghua Commences Construction of First 13,600TEU Green Container Ship for Seaspan

On August 19, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. kicked off construction of the first 13,600TEU large container ship (Hull No.H1943A) built for Seaspan.

The 13,600 TEU large container ship is another green and environmentally friendly container ship independently developed and designed by Hudong-Zhonghua. The ship has an overall length of approximately 336 meters, a beam of 51 meters and a depth of 30.2 meters. It has a maximum container capacity of 14,132 TEUs and provides 2,000 refrigerated container slots.

Adopting the latest design concepts, the ship is equipped with a scrubber and energy-saving devices to meet the shipowner’s future requirements for green fuel retrofits, ensuring low energy consumption, high speed and green environmental protection performance. These features make it fully compliant with the most stringent international environmental regulations and provide customers with efficient and economical maritime transportation solutions.

It is understood that the project involves a total of six ships and uses offshore RMB settlement, which is of great significance for promoting the internationalization of the RMB. In response to the national call, Hudong-Zhonghua has strengthened its friendly relations with various partners and actively promoted the internationalization of the RMB on the basis of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, demonstrating a high sense of social responsibility and a deep understanding and support for national policies.

Settling in RMB will help Hudong-Zhonghua reduce foreign exchange risks, enhance profitability, and improve market competitiveness. It will also help shipowners lower financing costs and improve trade efficiency.

It is worth noting that a few days before the keel-laying ceremony for the first 13,600 TEU large container ship, China State Shipbuilding Corporation signed a contract with Seaspan for the construction of 12 conventional fuel-powered 9,000 TEU container ships. This project will also use cross-border RMB settlement.

This is another bulk order signed by the two parties following the contract signed in October 2024 for the construction of six 13,600 TEU conventional fuel-powered container ships, marking a new level of cooperation between the two parties.
