HD Hyundai Samho Delivers 88,000 m³ LPG/Ammonia Carrier “Energy North” to Nakilat

Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat) recently announced the delivery of the “Energy North”, an 88,000 m³ very large LPG/ammonia carrier built by South Korea’s HD Hyundai Samho. The vessel was named on September 30 and is scheduled to enter service on October 2.

Reportedly, the “Energy North” is the first of six vessels ordered by Nakilat from the shipyard; the vessel is capable of operating on either LPG or conventional marine fuels and can transport both LPG and ammonia.

As previously reported, the order comprises six new vessels—two 174,000 m³ LNG carriers and four 88,000 m³ very large LPG/ammonia carriers—with a total value of approximately $950 million. Construction officially commenced following a steel-cutting ceremony at HD Hyundai Samho on March 16, 2025, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2027.

Nakilat stated that this series of six new vessels will incorporate the latest technology, featuring energy-saving equipment and eco-friendly, high-efficiency propulsion systems, underscoring the company’s commitment to providing ecological solutions for the sustainable development of the shipping industry.

In addition, Nakilat has signed a contract with Hanwha Ocean for the construction of eight 174,000 m³ LNG carriers. The total order value is approximately $1.818 billion, with a unit cost of around $227 million. The vessels will be built at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje Shipyard; construction commenced in March 2025, and delivery is scheduled by January 31, 2028.
