Danaos Corporation Expands Newcastlemax Bulk Carrier Order to Four Vessels with Daijin Heavy Industry

In the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025, Greek shipowner Danaos Corporation announced an order for two Newcastlemax bulk carriers to be constructed by Daijin Heavy Industry. The latest update indicates that the order has been expanded to four vessels.

Danaos fleet data indicates that the company’s order for Newcastlemax bulk carriers under construction has increased to four vessels, each with a deadweight tonnage of 211,000 tons. These vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2028, with hull numbers designated as HN DJCFD010, HN DJCFD011, HN DJCFD016, and HN DJCFD017.

The total cost of this new fleet of vessels is nearly $300 million, with each unit priced at approximately $75 million.

The four new vessels being built by Daijin Heavy Industry represent Danaos’ first bulk carrier order. Previously focused on container shipping, Danaos currently holds orders for 27 container ships with a total capacity of 174,550 TEU under construction as of December 31, 2025, with deliveries scheduled for 2026 (3 vessels), 2027 (13 vessels), 2028 (7 vessels), and 2029 (4 vessels), respectively. All newbuildings incorporate the latest eco-friendly designs and will be constructed in strict compliance with the latest IMO EEDI Phase 3 requirements.

It is worth noting that this batch of bulk carrier orders is also a milestone for the shipyard. Daijin Heavy Industry had previously secured orders for deck cargo vessels and semi-submersible barges; this new order marks the company’s official entry into the large bulk carrier market, achieving a new breakthrough in its business.
