DSIC Expands Shipbuilding Capacity with Four New Berths, Order Book Extends to 2030

On November 26th, a joint acceptance team consisting of the Liaoning Provincial Port Office, the Port Office of Dalian Municipal People’s Government, Dalian Customs, Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration, and Liaoning Entry-Exit Border Inspection General Station completed the acceptance inspection for the opening-up of Berths 1#, 2#, 3#, and 4# of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC). The team approved the official opening and operation of these berths.

The four berths that passed acceptance inspection are all outfitting berths, accommodating vessels ranging from 10,000 to 300,000 tons. Once operational, these berths will alleviate the shortage of outfitting facilities at DSIC, shorten shipbuilding delivery cycles, enable newly constructed vessels to sail directly to sea from the outfitting berths, reduce delivery costs, and further enhance the company’s core competitiveness.

DSIC is steadily advancing toward a new phase of high-quality development, underpinned by a solid order base, forward-looking technological strategies, and flexible trade cooperation models. In mid-November, DSIC announced a single order for 30 new vessels, encompassing multiple ship types across its three core segments: container ships, oil tankers, and bulk carriers. The order includes 16 container ships of two types, 10 oil tankers of three types, and 4 bulk carriers, with clients spanning both domestic and international shipowners.

DSIC is steadily advancing toward a new phase of high-quality development, underpinned by a solid order base, forward-looking technological strategies, and flexible trade cooperation models. In mid-November, DSIC announced a single order for 30 new vessels, covering multiple ship types across its three core segments: container ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. The order includes 16 container ships of two types, 10 oil tankers of three types, and 4 bulk carriers, with clients from both domestic and international shipowners.

To date, DSIC has secured new ship orders exceeding 100 vessels with a total deadweight tonnage of nearly 13 million tons. According to the latest production schedule, the main production lines at DSIC are fully scheduled through 2029-2030.

As order volumes continue to climb, DSIC has announced its large-scale high-end vessel construction capability upgrade project. This initiative aims to enhance the shipyard’s capacity for constructing large LNG carriers, FPSOs, and other high-end vessels by upgrading its dock facilities and supporting infrastructure for large-scale shipbuilding.

This project will increase specialized equipment for large LNG vessel construction, including materials processing and installation for containment systems and cryogenic pipe fabrication. It will also introduce digital equipment such as high-end digital production lines for marine applications. Additionally, it will upgrade large-scale LNG carrier coating equipment, welding and cutting equipment, measurement and testing equipment, transportation equipment, information technology hardware and software, and production support equipment. These enhancements will comprehensively improve DSIC’s capabilities for constructing large, high-end vessels. The project will increase or upgrade a total of 1,940 sets of process equipment, with no increase in building area.

According to its official website, DSIC was founded in 1898. As a key assembly enterprise under China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, it serves as a major surface vessel construction base in China and a vital manufacturing hub for high-end vessels and offshore engineering equipment.

DSIC primarily operates in three major sectors: defense industry, marine and offshore industry, and emerging industries. Within the defense sector, its core activities include the final assembly and construction of defense products, as well as maintenance and support services. The marine and offshore sector focuses on the final assembly and construction of marine and offshore equipment, repairs and conversions, and the construction of supporting marine and offshore equipment.

DSIC has established an overall layout of “one headquarters and three bases.” The headquarters, located in Dalian, serves as the R&D/marketing/management center. The three bases are the Dalian base, the Tianjin base, and the Shanhaiguan base. Specifically, the Dalian base focuses on the assembly, construction, maintenance, and conversion of defense products, as well as the construction of high-value-added civilian ships and offshore engineering projects; the Shanhaiguan base focuses on high-end ship repair and the construction of small and medium-sized civilian ships; and the Tianjin base specializes in the mass production of large container ships, bulk carriers and oil tankers.
