CCTV News reported that on September 3, the hull of the P-84, a large floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) unit built by CIMC Group for Petrobras, was completed in Yantai, Shandong. This is the world’s first large FPSO to feature an all-electric design, and it is also the largest single FPSO hull project undertaken by a Chinese shipyard to date.

Often aptly described as an “offshore oil processing plant,” the FPSO is a core piece of high-end equipment for developing deep-sea oil and gas resources. The newly completed P-84 hull measures 345.3 meters in length, 64.8 meters in width, and 34.3 meters in molded depth, with a total weight exceeding 100,000 tons. It boasts a daily natural gas processing capacity of 10 million cubic meters and a crude oil storage capacity of 2 million barrels.
The P-84 is the world’s first large-scale FPSO to utilize an all-electric architecture, incorporating a suite of low-carbon technologies such as zero routine flaring, waste heat recovery, and deep-sea water cooling. Thanks to its all-electric configuration and optimized production process systems, the platform will reduce greenhouse gas emission intensity per barrel of oil equivalent by approximately 30%, making it one of the most energy-efficient platforms globally.

Upon completion, the FPSO will be deployed at an ultra-deepwater pre-salt oil field in Brazil’s Santos Basin. The successful completion of the P-84 hull represents a significant breakthrough in all-electric FPSO construction technology, marking a major step forward for my country’s shipbuilding industry as it accelerates its transition toward high-end offshore engineering equipment and high-value-added vessel manufacturing.
