MSC’s Giant LNG-Powered Boxship Begins Construction at China’s Zhoushan Changhong International

On November 12, Chinese shipbuilder Zhoushan Changhong International broke ground on the first 19,000 TEU dual-fuel container ship for MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) at its Daishan processing workshop.

The ship has a total length of approximately 366.0 meters, a beam of 58.8 meters, a depth of 30.2 meters and a designed draft of 17.0 meters. It can efficiently carry approximately 19,000 standard containers, making it one of the world’s largest dual-fuel container ships. This vessel significantly increases the cargo capacity per voyage in route operations, providing strong support for shipping companies to enhance overall operational efficiency, making it one of the most competitive ship types in the current global container ship market.

As the largest LNG dual-fuel container ship currently under construction in Zhejiang Province, the successful commencement of this ship highlights Zhoushan Changhong International’s comprehensive capabilities in the field of large shipbuilding.

Since 2023, MSC and Zhoushan Changhong International have signed contracts for approximately 40 container ships, ranging in size from 10,300 TEU to 22,000 TEU, with the longest delivery date scheduled for 2029. Zhoushan Changhong International has become MSC’s largest shipbuilding partner globally.

On November 8, Zhoushan Changhong International delivered an 11,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship to MSC. This ship type was jointly developed and designed by Zhoushan Changhong International and CIMC Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute (CIMC ORIC), with fully shared intellectual property rights. The vessel measures 335 meters in overall length, 45.6 meters in beam, and 25 meters in depth, with a design speed of 20 knots.
