On August 15, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. held a launch ceremony for its Production Capacity Consolidation and Enhancement Project. This project serves as a key initiative in Hudong-Zhonghua’s long-term strategy to strengthen and optimize its core marine equipment business. It will fully unlock the development potential of the shipyard, address capacity bottlenecks, optimize production layouts, and solidify the infrastructure foundation, thereby laying a solid groundwork for achieving the goal of doubling production capacity during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.

Hudong-Zhonghua stated that the project is positioned as a world-leading, large-scale final assembly shipbuilding base capable of constructing high-end vessels—such as LNG carriers and ultra-large container ships—through a coordinated dual-site production layout that further boosts the company’s shipbuilding capacity. Upon completion, the new project will ensure more stable and efficient delivery for global partners and open up broader avenues for strategic cooperation; furthermore, it will powerfully support CSSC’s goal of becoming a world-class shipbuilding group and enhance China’s independent, controllable capabilities in high-end marine equipment.
Hudong-Zhonghua will focus its efforts on five key dimensions—innovation in processes, equipment, logistics, energy conservation and carbon reduction, and operational control—to deepen digital transformation and drive intelligent upgrades. By fostering the deep integration of digital and intelligent technologies across the entire manufacturing process, the company aims to build a flagship smart factory and accelerate its development into a world-leading base for the final assembly and construction of high-end vessels.
At the launching ceremony, Hu Xianfu, member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy General Manager of CSSC, pointed out that the shipbuilding industry is a concentrated expression of the country’s maritime strength and industrial level. High-tech and high value-added ship types such as large LNG ships and container ships are a key yardstick for measuring the strength of the country’s shipbuilding industry. The party and the country have high hopes for the high-quality development of the shipbuilding industry. As the world’s largest shipbuilding group, it must place the improvement of high-end shipbuilding capabilities in a prominent position and demonstrate the responsibility of central enterprises in the construction of a maritime and manufacturing power.
Hudong-Zhonghua must take the launch of this project as a new starting point, earnestly shoulder its main responsibilities, take a long-term view, and systematically lay out, coordinately promote intelligent manufacturing, green manufacturing, and lean manufacturing, build a world-class modern production line, effectively play a leading role, promote the coordinated development of domestic supporting industries, and improve the resilience and safety level of the industrial chain and supply chain.
Abdullah Al-Mulla, Senior Director of the LNG Shipping Project at QatarEnergy, stated that the project to consolidate and enhance Hudong-Zhonghua’s production capacity is of great significance. As QatarEnergy continues to expand its production capacity, the demand for maritime shipping capabilities—and specifically for advanced, efficient, and eco-friendly vessels—will grow, paving the way for even broader prospects for cooperation with Hudong-Zhonghua.
Ren Yongqiang, Party Secretary and Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING Energy, stated that the launch of the capacity consolidation and enhancement project by Hudong-Zhonghua represents not only a benchmark enterprise surpassing its own achievements but also injects new certainty into the LNG industry chain. As the market for clean energy transport in China expands, the industry continues to grow in scale and sophistication. This initiative by Hudong-Zhonghua has generated high expectations among all parties for deepened cooperation. Through close collaboration among shipyards, shipowners, and energy companies, the industry will further explore cutting-edge technological fields—such as large-scale LNG carriers and low-carbon, smart vessels—thereby driving the development of China’s independent LNG transport system and contributing greater Chinese strength to the global clean energy supply chain.
Cai Xiaofei, a member of the Party Leadership Group and full-time Deputy Director of the Shanghai Changxing Island Management Committee, stated that Changxing Island serves as a core hub for China’s high-end marine equipment manufacturing and a strategic stronghold for the shipbuilding industry. He noted that the launch of capacity consolidation and enhancement by Hudong-Zhonghua is of extraordinary significance; it is not only essential for the company’s own development but also a crucial step in implementing the national strategy of building a strong maritime nation and supporting Shanghai’s marine industry layout for the “15th Five-Year Plan” period.
Chen Jianliang, Party Secretary and Chairman of Hudong-Zhonghua, stated that the company has long cultivated expertise in sectors such as large LNG carriers and ultra-large container ships, boasting a robust order book and solid core technologies. The project entails the construction of a brand-new, specialized final assembly line and supporting facilities, with a focus on enhancing capabilities for the batch and intelligent construction of high-end vessels like large LNG carriers and ultra-large container ships. Upon completion, the project will effectively address capacity bottlenecks, propel Hudong-Zhonghua’s revenue to a new level, and further consolidate the company’s leading position in the global high-end shipbuilding market.

To establish itself as a world-class marine equipment manufacturer, Hudong-Zhonghua relocated its operations to a new site in May 2025; the coating workshop at the headquarters’ new facility (Phase II project) was subsequently delivered in December of the same year.
In April 2026, a 1,600-ton gantry crane was delivered and put into operation at Dock No. 1 of Hudong-Zhonghua’s Western Plant. It is currently the shipyard’s most powerful piece of core equipment. Its commissioning marks a significant leap in the company’s lifting capabilities, facilitating the efficient construction of upcoming batch orders, such as 271,000-cubic-meter ultra-large LNG carriers and ultra-large container ships.
Regarding new shipbuilding orders, Hudong-Zhonghua has secured contracts for nearly 50 vessels (including options) so far this year, comprising 13+7 LNG carriers, 16 container ships, and 12 VLCCs.
