Hapag-Lloyd Names New LNG-Powered 24,000 TEU Giant “Wilhelmshaven Express”

On October 28, German liner giant Hapag-Lloyd held a naming ceremony in Wilhelmshaven for its new 240,000 TEU-class liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel-powered ultra-large container vessel, the Wilhelmshaven Express.

The vessel is 399 meters in length, 61 meters in beam, with a gross tonnage of 229,380 and a deadweight tonnage of 229,350 tons. It is equipped with dual-fuel engines with a total installed power of 58,270 kilowatts, and the cargo hold features 1,500 refrigerated sockets.

This vessel belongs to a series specifically designed for dual-fuel operation; in addition to the main engine, auxiliary machinery and boilers all utilize a dual-fuel system.

The “Wilhelmshaven Express” is the last of 12 vessels of the same type built by Hanwha Ocean for Hapag-Lloyd, to be delivered in the second quarter of 2025, and will be operated together with sister vessels on Hapag-Lloyd’s East-West service from Europe to Asia. This series of container vessels is the “largest container ship” sailing under the German flag.
