Hudong-Zhonghua Kicks Off $54M Expansion of CSSC Changxing Base’s 2# Dock for Advanced Shipbuilding

According to the Shanghai Construction Engineering Trading Service Center, recently, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. has completed the filing work for the “Extension and Renovation Project of 2# dock in the Phase II Project of CSSC Changxing Shipbuilding Base” at the Administrative Service Center of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

The project is located at No. 888, Jiangnan Avenue, Changxing Town, Chongming District, Shanghai. With a total investment of approximately 390 million yuan (approximately US$54 million), the main construction content is as follows:

  • The 2# dock will be extended by 220m to 660m toward the land, and the stern and side assembly areas of the dock will be constructed, with a total area of 27,180 square meters.
  • The tracks of the 700t gantry crane and the portal crane on both sides of the dock will be extended by 223m and 240m respectively.
  • The ship handling system will be renovated, and new process equipment such as electric winches will be added.
  • Auxiliary facilities such as the 7# distribution station will be newly built, and the water, electricity, gas and power energy supply facilities will be renovated and upgraded.

The total newly added construction area is 324 square meters, and 5 sets of process equipment are newly added (renovated). The project involves the renovation of the dock for ships with a tonnage greater than 10,000 tons.

According to previous reports, the site of the second phase of the CSSC Changxing Base is located along the south bank of Shanghai Changxing Island, with a total construction area of 431.8 hectares and a total investment of 18 billion yuan (about US$ 2.509 billion). The 2# dock project is the most important production facility of the Changxing Phase II project. It is 440 meters long, 92 meters wide, and 13.1 meters deep. It includes a 1,800-square-meter main engine pre-installation workshop and 532 square meters of auxiliary buildings and water pump rooms, water outlet pools, substations and other facilities. The main construction content includes 1 dock, 8 craneways, 1 general assembly platform, revetments on both sides of the dock entrance, and two piers.

Hudong-Zhonghua said that the transformation is aimed at optimizing the ship slot layout and final assembly shipbuilding process, forming a semi-tandem construction capability for high-value-added civilian ships such as large container ships, and ultimately building a modern shipbuilding production line with balanced capabilities that takes into account both military and civilian needs.
