CSE’s Breakthrough 7G80MEC Methanol Dual-Fuel Engine Enters Final Assembly for CMES’ Smart VLCC

CSSC Engine Co., Ltd. (CSE) has reached a significant milestone as its 7G80MEC-LGIM-EGRTC main engine, designed for methanol dual-fuel VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers), has now entered the final assembly phase.

The 7G80MEC-LGIM-EGRTC main engine is the first ultra-large cylinder diameter methanol dual-fuel main engine built by CSE. It is another masterpiece to improve the company’s methanol dual-fuel main engine model spectrum. It will be installed on the world’s first methanol dual-fuel powered intelligent VLCC tanker built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC) for China Merchants Hai Hong Holdings Company Limited.

As the delivery date approaches, CSE will complete the final assembly and commissioning work to build a strong “green heart” for the world’s first methanol dual-fuel VLCC, helping China’s shipbuilding industry achieve new breakthroughs in the low-carbon transformation race. It is understood that this VLCC was ordered by China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. (CMES) in 2023 with a net price of US$107.5 million and is scheduled to be delivered before April 2026.

This VLCC is the eighth-generation VLCC independently developed by DSIC relying on scientific research projects. Classed by China Classification Society (CCS), the VLCC has a total length of approximately 333 meters and a beam of 60 meters and it can carry about 2.1 million barrels of crude oil. With the latest design, the vessel has the same cargo carrying capacity as its predecessor while lowering the ship’s draft, showing more excellent overall performance and is a highly efficient and energy-saving VLCC.

Meanwhile, the vessel adopts methanol dual-fuel main engine, equipped with main engine EGR, generator SCR nitrogen removal equipment and open type desulfurization scrubber tower equipment, which fully meets the latest environmental protection emission standards and maximizes energy efficiency and economy. In addition, it is equipped with intelligent equipment such as intelligent energy efficiency, intelligent liquid cargo, intelligent operation and maintenance, and intelligent ship-based platform, which further enhances the its operational efficiency and operational safety.
