China’s Ammonia-Fueled Marine Engine Marks Milestone with Successful Sea Trials

Recently, the CPGC/CSE-WinGD 6X72DF-A-1.0-HPSCR ammonia-fueled low-speed engine, manufactured by CSSC Engine (a subsidiary of CSSC Power (Group) Corporation Ltd. (CPGC), successfully completed its sea trials in ammonia mode.

The main engine boasts superior performance metrics, with post-combustion ammonia emissions achieving a historic breakthrough by falling below 10 ppm, resulting in near-zero ammonia escape. This achievement has been highly recognized by shipowners, shipyards, and classification societies alike, marking a milestone breakthrough for China’s green marine propulsion systems in the transition to a zero-carbon future.

This series comprises ten ammonia-fueled main engines, independently developed by WinGD (a CSSC subsidiary) and manufactured by CSSC Engine. This sea trial marks the first time an engine in this series has been tested in ammonia-fueled mode.

During the sea trials, the main engine operated stably, with no instances of liquid ammonia leakage or other leaks involving water, oil, or gas. The engine successfully passed—on the first attempt—all tests regarding ammonia mode switching, safety system functionality, and Tier II and Tier III load operations; notably, zero alarms were triggered during the four-hour unmanned engine room trial. Ultimately, all sea trial objectives were completed one day ahead of schedule.
