COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) successfully converted a VLCC into an FPSO

After 27 months, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) completed the VLCC conversion project.

The project is to convert a 300,000 DWT VLCC into a FPSO(Floating Production Storage and Offloading) unit. After conversion, the FPSO will produce and handle 100,000 barrels of oil per day, with a minimum storage capacity of 1 million barrels of crude oil and a design service life of 30 years. And it will provide services in the Santos field in water depths of 1,400 meters off the coast of Brazil.

During the conversion process of this VLCC, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) made continuous breakthroughs, including completing the first repair work in dock in 22 days; reducing the use of 20,000 m³ of scaffolding dismantling and erection; completing the new building of the living building 22 days before schedule; completing the second repair work in dock 25 days before schedule; completing the lifting of the module and the torch tower in 20 days; and laying cables ahead of schedule, resulting in an improvement of 40% in the efficiency of the work.

FPSO Maria Quiteria is the sixth FPSO offshore project undertaken by SCOSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai). The smooth delivery of the FPSO marks that the company has possessed the full-chain working capability of VLCC converted FPSO, and is also a milestone for the company to actively promote China’s “high-end manufacturing” to go out and enter the field of high-end oil and gas platform modification.
