Alberta Shipmanagement, the Greek shipping company owned by the Inglessis family, continues to expand its tanker orderbook, having placed orders for two new vessels with a Japanese shipyard.

According to multiple shipping data platforms, Alberta Shipmanagement has ordered two 115,000 DWT Aframax tankers from Imabari Shipbuilding for delivery in 2028; the cost of the order has not been disclosed. Industry sources indicate that the deal was finalized several months ago but only recently made public.
In contrast to the sluggish order activity seen in 2025, orders for Aframax/LR2 tankers rebounded in 2026. A mid-year report by Veson Nautical indicates that global shipowners placed orders for a total of 68 Aframax/LR2 tankers between January and June 2026—a significant increase from the 16 vessels ordered during the same period the previous year.
Alberta Shipmanagement, the company behind these recent order announcements, favors Japanese shipyards for its fleet expansion. For instance, the owner placed orders with Japan Marine United (JMU) last year for two Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), with full delivery expected in the first and second quarters of 2027.
According to its official website, Alberta Shipmanagement currently operates an active fleet of 22 tankers and bulk carriers; 21 were built by Japanese shipyards, and one by a South Korean shipyard. Regarding vessels under construction, in addition to the two VLCCs, the company has two 1,900 TEU feeder container ships on order at Huangpu Wenchong—scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2027—while the newbuild project at Imabari Shipbuilding has not yet been included in the fleet data.
Beyond newbuild projects, Alberta Shipmanagement also expands its fleet capacity through the secondhand market. In May 2026, the company acquired the “Tardis”, a 2006-built LR1 tanker originally constructed and delivered by a Japanese shipyard; formerly named the “Pgc Alexandria”, the vessel was purchased for nearly $16 million.
Records show that Alberta Shipmanagement’s shipping heritage dates back to 1875; the company was established in its current form in 2019 by a fifth-generation member of the Inglessis family.
