BGN Books Two Dual-Fuel VLGC Newbuilds at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries

On 5th June, BGN has signed a new contract with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for the construction of two dual-fuel Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), further strengthening its position in the global LPG shipping market.

The vessels, each with a cargo capacity of 93,000 cbm, will be built at HD HHI’s shipyard in Korea and are scheduled for delivery by 2029. The agreement follows BGN’s recent order for four additional dual-fuel VLGCs and increases the company’s owned LPG VLGC fleet to 19 vessels.

Designed to operate on both conventional and lower-emissions fuels, the new vessels are also capable of carrying ammonia, supporting BGN’s commitment to the decarbonisation of maritime transport.

With one of the largest owned and chartered shipping fleets in its sector, BGN continues to invest in modern, efficient maritime infrastructure to support growing global energy demand, strengthen supply chains and advance its long-term growth ambitions.

Including the latest orders, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has secured a total of 125 new ship orders worth $14.41 billion this year, achieving 61.8% of its annual order target of $23.31 billion.

By vessel type, the order book includes 16 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, 28 container ships, 38 LPG/ammonia/liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, 7 crude oil tankers, 33 product tankers, 2 car carriers, and 1 icebreaker.

It is worth noting that these two VLGCs mark the second time in recent months that BGN has placed an order for large gas carriers with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. In April 2026, the shipowner ordered four 90,000-cubic-meter-class VLGCs from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries at a unit price of $115 million, with delivery scheduled for the second half of 2029. With the finalization of this latest order, the size of BGN’s owned VLGC fleet has increased to 19 vessels.
