On May 27, Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Ningbo Ocean Shipping, and at the same time, the two parties signed an agreement to build 4+2 1900TEU vessels.

This 1900TEU container ship, designed by the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, is approximately 171.95 meters long and 27.5 meters wide. It is precisely adapted to the transportation needs of shallow-water ports and narrow channels in the Asian region, and has the advantages of low fuel consumption, high energy efficiency, and strong cargo capacity. It fully meets the EEDI III green energy efficiency standard and is a model of green and intelligent feeder container ships.
Under the agreement, the two parties will focus on four core areas—shipbuilding cooperation, joint R&D of green and smart vessels, full-lifecycle services and supply chain coordination, and market expansion and joint brand development—to establish a deep strategic partnership aimed at sharing resources, leveraging complementary strengths, and achieving mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.

On May 15, Ningbo Ocean Shipping announced the results of the bidding for the “4+2 1,900 TEU Container Ship Construction Project,” with Wuchang Shipbuilding winning the contract. According to the company’s announcement regarding the “Investment in the Construction of Container Ships and Containers,” it will invest no more than 1.7 billion yuan (approximately $251 million) to order 4+2 1,900 TEU container ships, with the construction cost per vessel not exceeding 283 million yuan.
According to public records, Wuchang Shipbuilding is a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation and serves as a key pillar of China’s shipbuilding and defense industries. The company currently specializes in the construction of chemical tankers, container ships, offshore support vessels, offshore oil modules, government vessels, research vessels, ro-ro ships, and multi-purpose vessels.
In recent years, Wuchang Shipbuilding has delivered multiple batches of high-value-added container ships, starting with the successful completion of a series of six 1,100 TEU container ships, followed by the efficient fulfillment of an order for nine container ships (five 1,100 TEU vessels and four 1,800 TEU vessels), and now the successful securing of a contract for four plus two 1,900 TEU container ships from Ningbo Ocean Shipping. Leveraging its core strengths in rhythmic construction, high-quality delivery, and green and smart upgrades, the shipyard has firmly established itself among the top tier of domestic shipbuilders for the mass production of feeder container ships, earning the widespread trust of shipowners worldwide.
Ningbo Ocean Shipping has established a multi-tiered shipping network encompassing “international short-haul, domestic coastal, and Yangtze River inland waterways,” with routes covering 49 major ports worldwide. Leveraging its robust market operations and fleet modernization strategy, the company continues to lead the way in the high-quality development of regional shipping.
