GTT Secures Tank Design Deal for MISC’s New 170,000 cbm FSRU

French company GTT recently announced that it has signed a supply contract with Samsung Heavy Industries in the second quarter of 2026 to provide cargo tank design for a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) undertaken by the latter.

Under the contract, this FSRU will have a cargo capacity of 170,000 cubic meters and will be equipped with GTT’s proprietary Mark III membrane containment system.

This FSRU was ordered by Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC) and is the first FSRU in the company’s fleet. With a total construction cost of approximately $330 million, the shipbuilding contract was announced on May 4, 2026, and delivery is expected in the first quarter of 2029.

FSRUs, known as floating LNG receiving terminals, are primarily used in regions where energy demand is surging or where it is difficult to construct onshore terminals. Since FSRUs have a shorter construction cycle than onshore terminals, and against the backdrop of the booming artificial intelligence (AI) industry, this type of facility is gradually emerging as one of the solutions for energy supply.

Upon delivery, the FSRU constructed by MISC will be deployed off the west coast of Malaysia, helping to improve the local natural gas supply infrastructure and enhance the nation’s flexibility in energy supply allocation.
