Holland America Line Rolls Out $500M Fleet Renovation Project with Fincantieri

Holland America Line recently announced the launch of a multi-year investment program—the “Holland America Evolution”—aimed at comprehensively renovating and upgrading its six cruise ships.

The refit project will be carried out by a shipyard owned by the Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri, which has delivered all 11 of Holland America Line’s cruise ships.

This is Holland America Line’s largest-ever guest experience enhancement program, with a total investment of over $500 million, aimed at improving the quality of guest accommodations and adding new cabins and suites to increase capacity and offer guests more choices.

Under the plan, the upgrades will cover four “Vista” class ships—the “Oosterdam,” “Zuiderdam,” “Westerdam,” and “Noordam”—and two “Signature” class ships—the “ Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam. The ships will undergo a comprehensive upgrade, and the signature design and service features of Holland America Line’s “Pinnacle” class will be introduced to most of the fleet.

This project will span several years, with key upgrades including an expanded selection of onboard dining and bar options, the refurbishment and redesign of core public areas, and the introduction of new cabin and suite categories—all while preserving the spacious layout and warm onboard atmosphere that guests cherish most.

The “Oosterdam” will be the first ship to undergo this renovation, with completion and delivery expected in the fall of 2027. The upgrades will include the addition of the highly acclaimed “Grand Dutch Café,” a feature previously exclusive to “Pinnacle” class ships, as well as new cabin offerings such as balcony cabins designed specifically for solo travelers and panoramic suites with expansive views. A total of 76 new cabins will be installed, including new cabin types such as single-occupancy balcony cabins, bridge-view suites, and ocean-view suites.

In addition to new facilities, the “Oosterdam” will undergo an interior renovation and refurbishment, with a focus on reducing waste and incorporating circular design principles. The project will prioritize upcycling and material reuse while creating a more open and airy atmosphere, resulting in a more elegant and timeless visual and tactile experience.

On the technical front, Holland America Line is making targeted investments to improve energy efficiency, including optimizing smart power management and upgrading system performance, with the aim of gradually reducing energy consumption and lowering the carbon intensity of its operations.
