Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding Converts Repair Dock to Shipbuilding Dock, Lays Keel for First 9,200 TEU Container Vessel for Danaos

Amid the continued boom in the new shipbuilding market, Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (SHGSIC) is converting its repair dock into a shipbuilding dock.

On the morning of March 20, the keel-laying ceremony for the C9200TEU container ship was held at SHGSIC’s Dock No. 5, a subsidiary of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC). This ship is the first of five vessels built for the Greek Danaos Corporation and is also the largest container ship ever built by SHGSIC.

In 2024, Danaos placed an order with DSIC for five 9,200 TEU container ships, with a cost of approximately US$104 million per ship and a total value of approximately US$520 million for the five ships. The ships are scheduled to be delivered between 2027 and 2028.

This keel laying marks the official transformation and upgrading of Dock No. 5 from a repair dock to a shipbuilding dock, and its commencement of operations. According to a previous announcement by SHGSIC, the focus of the dock’s transformation was on enhancing its lifting capacity.

SHGSIC, formerly known as Shanhaiguan Shipyard, is a large state-owned enterprise under China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited. Construction began in 1972, and it officially went into operation in 1986. In 2007, it was restructured into SHGSIC through shareholding reform, and in 2016, it was merged into DSIC.
