Jiangnan Shipyard Hands Over Second 15,000 TEU Methanol-Powered Container Ship to CMA CGM

On December 17, Jiangnan Shipyard held a naming and delivery ceremony for the second vessel in the “Kun” series of methanol dual-fuel large container ships built for CMA CGM Group. The ship, named “CMA CGM EUGENIE”, is the 100th container ship delivered by Jiangnan Shipyard.

This series of 15,000 TEU methanol-powered dual-fuel container ships represents the Kun series of large container ships (“KUN-15M”) independently developed and designed by Jiangnan Shipyard with a total length of 366 meters.

This ship is a new type of high-efficiency, green, energy-saving and environmentally friendly ultra-large container ship independently developed by Jiangnan Shipyard, which actively promotes the close integration of research and development design and production, while closely focusing on the needs of shipowners.

It is worth noting that the first ship in the series, “CMA CGM ANTIGONE”, was delivered on December 12. Its successful construction makes Jiangnan Shipyard the only shipyard in China that can design and build ultra-large container ships powered by three different fuels.

The delivered 15,000 TEU methanol-powered dual-fuel container ship was contracted for construction in April 2023. Within this order batch, CMA CGM and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) jointly signed contracts for two types totaling 16 large container ships, valued at over RMB 21 billion. This set a new record for the largest single container ship order in China’s shipbuilding industry at that time, and also marked CSSC’s first batch order for methanol-fueled container ships.

This order includes 12 methanol dual-fuel container ships with a capacity of 15,000 TEUs and 4 LNG dual-fuel ultra-large container ships with a capacity of 23,000 TEUs. The 15,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel large container ships are constructed by Jiangnan Shipyard and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC), each building 6 ships. The 4 23,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel ultra-large container ships are constructed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.

It is understood that the “Kun” series ships built for CMA CGM, as the first batch of methanol dual-fuel container ships built by Jiangnan Shipyard, not only successfully demonstrate the Jiangnan Shipyard’s continuous improvement and optimization of R&D level, construction technology and management methods, but also Jiangnan Shipyard’s practical contribution to actively responding to the development of green shipping. In the future, the company will continue to focus on the field of green shipping and provide more ship type solutions.
