On November 5, the 174,000 m³ LNG carrier “GreenEnergy Kun,” built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for CNOOC Medium and Long-Term FOB Resource Supporting LNG Carrier Project (Phase II), was successfully named.

The “GreenEnergy Kun” is the crowning achievement of Hudong-Zhonghua’s fifth-generation “Changheng Series.” It measures 299 meters in overall length and 46.4 meters in beam, with a service speed of 19.5 knots and a design capacity of 174,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas.
The vessel is equipped with the latest-generation cargo containment system, which reduces the natural evaporation rate in the cargo holds to as low as 0.085 percent; it is also fitted with an LNG cryogenic system to further minimize evaporative losses. The dual-fuel main engine is equipped with an intelligent exhaust gas recirculation system and a water treatment system, meeting IMO Tier III emission standards in both fuel oil and natural gas modes. This results in lower overall energy consumption and reduces daily carbon emissions by more than 10 tons.
Additionally, the vessel has achieved new improvements in safety, environmental performance, and operational efficiency. Once it enters service, it will undertake the important mission of ensuring the domestic supply of clean energy and promoting the green and low-carbon transition of the shipping industry, thereby adding a new and robust force to China’s maritime natural gas transportation.

Hudong-Zhonghua and CNOOC have been collaborating for more than 20 years. Since Hudong-Zhonghua received its first domestic orders for LNG carriers in 2004, the two parties have signed contracts for a total of 22 large LNG carriers, 18 of which have already been delivered.
Currently, Hudong-Zhonghua has a backlog of nearly 60 LNG carriers, ranking first globally in terms of cargo capacity. In the first 10 months of this year, the shipbuilder delivered a total of 10 large LNG carriers, setting a new record for the most and fastest deliveries by a single Chinese shipyard.
