Japanese Owners Itochu and Nissen Kaiun Place Orders at Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding for Bulk Carrier and Boxships

Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding has announced two shipbuilding contracts, both from Japanese shipowners.

Shipbroker Bancosta reports that Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding has signed a contract with Japanese shipowner Itochu Corporation for the construction of one 82,092 DWT Kamsarmax bulk carrier, scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026. Additionally, the shipyard has signed contracts with Japanese shipowner Nissen Kaiun for the construction of two 5,900 TEU container ships, scheduled for delivery in the second and third quarters of 2026. The prices for both orders were not disclosed.

In addition to the order from Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, Itochu Corporation has also ordered two 64,000 DWT bulk carriers from New Dayang Shipyard this year to continue the cooperation between the two parties that began in April 2024. The total number of vessels they have built together is now four.

It is understood that Itochu Corporation’s order is the second bulk carrier newbuilding project recently announced by Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding. Earlier, Nissen Kaiun ordered as many as 11 94,887 DWT bulk carriers from Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, which are expected to be delivered between June 2027 and October 2028.

In addition, Nissen Kaiun’s container ship project is the shipowner’s second shipbuilding contract with Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding this year, and also Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding’s first publicly disclosed order in this field this year.

Including the latest order, Zhoushan Changshi Shipbuilding has received orders for a total of 15 new vessels this year. In addition to the aforementioned bulk carrier and container ship projects, this also includes a contract from Seacon Shipping Group for a 63,300 DWT bulk carrier. The Seacon Shipping Group order is expected to be delivered by April 30, 2027.

According to public information, Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding was established in March 2003. It was originally a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tsuneishi Holdings, a subsidiary of the Tsuneishi Group, in China. In March 2025, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding completed its capital injection into Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, marking the transformation of Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding from a wholly Japanese-owned enterprise to a Sino-Japanese joint venture.

Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding primarily constructs bulk carriers, container vessels, and product tankers ranging from 30,000 to 100,000 deadweight tons. To date, the shipyard has completed over 280 vessels of various types. It operates two 80,000-ton slipways, one 80,000-ton dry dock, two 80,000-ton outfitting piers, and one 3,000-ton cargo handling pier.

To expand production capacity and further shorten shipbuilding cycles, Zhoushan Tsuneishi Shipbuilding invested in a 3,000-ton floating crane and two 700-ton gantry cranes in early 2009, boosting annual production capacity to approximately 25 vessels of 50,000 to 80,000 DWT.
