Recently, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) broke ground on the first vessel in a series of twelve 14,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessels for COSCO SHIPPING Lines, marking the start of the substantive construction phase for this series of new fuel vessel series.

This vessel has an overall length of 335.9 meters and a beam of 51 meters, with a capacity to carry approximately 13,700 standard containers. Equipped with a methanol dual-fuel propulsion system featuring WinGD methanol dual-fuel main engines and generators, the vessel significantly reduces carbon emissions when using green methanol fuel, meeting the stringent environmental requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
This vessel integrates multiple cutting-edge technologies, featuring advanced intelligent ship systems, the world’s largest capacity permanent magnet shaft generator, a concealed bulbous bow, high-efficiency propellers, and energy-saving ducts.
Therefore, it possesses four major advantages: “safety, greenness, energy saving, and intelligence,” and can meet the EEDI Phase III energy efficiency standards, representing the current advanced level of container vessel technology.
The commencement of construction for this vessel marks a significant transformation for 14,000 TEU container vessels, transitioning from traditional fuels to methanol as a new fuel source. This shift not only aligns with the global shipping industry’s trend toward emissions reduction but also provides crucial equipment support for COSCO SHIPPING Group’s development of green shipping routes. Upon entering service, the vessel will primarily operate on the Far East to Americas route, further enhancing green shipping practices along this route.
COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) has been making continuous strides in the field of green shipping in recent years. From the successful delivery of a 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessel to the commencement of construction for the first vessel in its 14,000 TEU series, and the ongoing progress in building an 114,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel tanker and a 325,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel ore carrier, the company has established a comprehensive methanol-powered vessel product portfolio covering container vessels, tankers, and bulk carriers.
One year ago, the Port of Chancay in Peru officially opened, marking a landmark project in the China-Peru collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative. The COSCO SHIPPING Peru vessel, constructed by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou), completed its inaugural unloading at the ceremony, becoming a vital link in trade between China and Latin America.

Over the past year, Port of Chancay has rapidly grown into Peru’s third-largest port, with container throughput steadily increasing, establishing itself as a maritime hub connecting China and Latin American markets. Along this increasingly busy shipping route, green vessels built by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry are continuously injecting new momentum into bilateral trade.
The thriving scene at Port of Chancay’s first anniversary celebration underscores the robust vitality of China-Latin America trade. The commencement of this vessel’s construction demonstrates the innovative strength of China’s shipbuilding industry in its green transformation. As more green vessels are progressively built and delivered, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) is actively contributing Chinese wisdom and solutions to the low-carbon development of the global shipping industry.
