Imabari Shipbuilding Delivers 209,000 DWT LNG Dual-Fuel Bulk Carrier “SG DAWN” to NYK

Recently, Imabari Shipbuilding’s Saijo Shipyard delivered the 209,000 DWT LNG dual-fuel bulk carrier “SG DAWN” to fellow shipping company Nippon Yusen (NYK).

“SG DAWN” is 299.99 meters long, 50.00 meters wide, 25.00 meters deep, with a deadweight of 210,125 tons. It is equipped with a 7S60ME-C10.5-GI main engine with a speed of approximately 14.0 knots, and can use both LNG and heavy fuel oil. It is classed with the Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NK) and flies the Japanese flag.

The LNG fuel tanks onboard are located aft of the upper deck accommodation area, ensuring cargo hold volumes comparable to those of heavy fuel oil carriers and achieving high transport efficiency. Each cargo hold is equipped with overhead and hopper tanks suitable for carrying solid bulk cargoes such as iron ore and coal. The design is optimized for more efficient loading and transportation of high-density (3 tons per cubic meter) bulk cargoes, with iron ore being the primary cargo transported.

When using heavy fuel oil, the vessel complies with EEDI Phase II and Phase III requirements (reducing emissions by at least 30% compared to the reference value). When using LNG fuel, it can further reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 20-30% and produce almost no sulfur oxide emissions.

In terms of environmental protection technology, its main engine is equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to reduce sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions; the generators and auxiliary boilers are dual-fuel types, enabling the utilization of boiling off gas (BOG) produced from the LNG fuel tanks, thereby preventing waste.

The vessel’s propulsion performance and environmental performance have been improved to a certain extent by installing energy-saving attachments and twisted rudders (a new type of energy-saving appendage) near the propeller, a bow shape that reduces propulsion resistance, and using a hull coating that reduces friction.
