As previous reported, German shipowner Elbdeich Reederei has ordered two 5,100 TEU widebeam container ships from a Far Eastern shipyard, with delivery expected in 2027. The shipbuilder and contract value have not yet been disclosed.
According to the latest official news from CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), Chinese shipbuilder Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding has signed and finalized a contract for two 5100TEU container ships of the “Honghu” series with the shipowner.
The “Honghu” 5100TEU container ship is Huangpu Wenchong’s first independently developed medium-sized container ship. This ship offers the following advantages:
- Its low-drag design offers excellent design draft resistance and fuel consumption, while also optimizing draft resistance and speed for structural draft and other operating conditions.
- Its features energy-saving features such as propeller-forward energy-saving ducts, a twisted rudder, a rudder bulb, and high-voltage shore power. Compared to other commercial ships, it boasts a higher 14MT container capacity and lower fuel consumption per container.
- It is suitable for a wide range of routes, including Australia, America, and Europe. It has a speed of 19 knots and an EEDI that is more than 50% below the baseline value.
- The main and auxiliary engines are equipped with SCR and scrubbers, meeting TIER III and sulfur emission standards. Optimized lashing and hatch cover design have increased the hatch cover load design.
- The structural design meets 25-year fatigue requirements for global navigation.
Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding stated that it has been deeply engaged in the feeder container ship market for many years. Since the launch of its independently developed “Honghu” 1900 TEU series container ships in 2020 and the securing of orders, the company has continued to innovate, developing outstanding products such as the “Honghu” 3000 TEU series and the “Honghu” 2400 TEU methanol dual-fuel series, which have also secured orders. Through sustained accumulation and innovation, ship design development and technological progress have evolved in tandem. In 2025, the independently developed “Honghu” series of medium-sized 5,100 TEU container ships finally came to fruition, marking a new milestone in container ship research and development.
