Elbdeich Reederei Expands Fleet with Two 5,100 TEU Container Ships from Huangpu Wenchong

German shipowner Elbdeich Reederei has ordered two 5,100 TEU widebeam container ships from a shipyard in the Far East, with delivery expected in 2027. The shipyard and contract value have not been disclosed. According to TradeWinds, the shipyard is CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding.

The new ships comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III emission standards and are equipped with a range of fuel-saving devices.

Elbdeich Reederei, headquartered in Hutsen, Germany, is a subsidiary of United Shipping Companies (USC). The company currently owns over 30 ships, has ordered several new ships and has been committed to steadily expanding its modern container fleet.

This latest order marks a further increase in the size of Elbdeich Reederei’s fleet and, upon delivery, will become the largest container newbuilding in the company’s fleet to date.

This year, Elbdeich Reederei has been relatively active in the container shipbuilding market and has ordered six new ships of two types from CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, including two 1,300TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships and two 1,900TEU container ships with another two option ships, which are expected to be delivered in 2026 and 2027 respectively.

Elbdeich Reederei’s collaboration with Huangpu Wenchong dates back to 2023, when the two parties signed a contract for two 1,250 TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships, which were chartered long-term to the Danish Unifeeder Group. Two options were granted in early 2024.
