Maersk Takes Delivery of 17,000 TEU Methanol Dual-Fuel Container Ship “Beijing Maersk”

Danish shipping giant Maersk has revealed that the 17,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship “Beijing Maersk”, built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, has been delivered and put into operation.

“Beijing Maersk” is 350 meters long, 56 meters wide, and can carry 17,480 standard containers. It is the second of six ships built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The first ship, the Berlin Mærsk, was named on June 18 and launched on July 7. Four more ships of the same type will be delivered this year.

Maersk stated that this series of container ships is considered an “important step” toward achieving its net-zero emissions goal, especially considering that they run on clean fuels such as methanol, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 60% compared to ships that use traditional heavy fuel oil (HFO).

It is worth noting that the 17,000 TEU and 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries are very similar in design. The only significant difference is that the 17,000 TEU ship has a wider beam and can carry more containers, making it the largest dual-fuel ship in the Maersk fleet to date.
