Japan’s K Line Takes Delivery of LNG Dual-Fuel PCTC “Tethys Highway” in Push for Greener Shipping

On July 18, Japan’s Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding named and delivered the 6,900 CEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel powered PCTC (pure car and track carrier) “Tethys Highway” built for Japan’s Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line).

The Tethys Highway is approximately 199.96 meters long, 38 meters wide and has a gross tonnage of 75,259. It mainly uses LNG as fuel. Compared with traditional vessels using heavy fuel oil, it is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide by 25% to 30%, and reduce sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions that cause air pollution by almost 100%.

The vessel is one of several new LNG dual-fuel PCTCs that K Line has taken delivery of over the past few months.

In related news, K Line has recently begun using bio-LNG to power its vessels as part of its broader strategy to adopt renewable fuels and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To realize its 2050 environmental vision, K Line says it will continue to promote the introduction of environmentally friendly fuels and strive to achieve its goals.
