First Ship-to-Ship LNG Bunkering at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai)

On June 20, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai), a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., completed the ship-to-ship LNG (liquefied natural gas) bunkering of the “CMA CGM Jacques Saadé” at Pier 1. This is the first time that a dual-fuel ship has been refueled with LNG from ship to ship at a Chinese shipbuilding and repair enterprise.

This bunkering is not only a major breakthrough for China’s shipbuilding and repairing enterprises, but also a key milestone for COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) to implement China’s “dual carbon” strategy and promote the development of green shipping. It provides a powerful demonstration and direction for the industry to move towards a low-carbon future and embark on a new green journey.

CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE is the second 23,000-TEU LNG dual-fuel container carrier repaired by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai). The ship is 399.9 meters long, 61.3 meters wide, 33.5 meters deep, and can store 18,600 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas LNG.

The repairs covered four major areas, namely LNG fuel system maintenance, ballast water system upgrade, windbreak installation, and hull silicone coating, as well as several special projects. The LNG fuel system maintenance included key operations such as fuel tank opening inspection, fuel pump dismantling, and valve and piping repairs. It also passed multiple strict processes such as airization, inerting, natural gas replacement, and cold tank treatment, ultimately ensuring the feasibility and safety of the fuel system.

At present, the repair and modification project of the ship has been basically completed and entered the system Commissioning stage. The successful repair and ship-to-ship LNG bunkering of the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE has accumulated multiple valuable experiences for the company in the field of dual-fuel ship repair and modification.

The successful trial of ship-to-ship LNG bunkering at the shipyard terminal is not only a perfect demonstration of the collaborative results among the industrial chain, but also provides a replicable collaborative model for China’s shipbuilding and repairing industry to explore the path of green development.

As global shipping accelerates its transition to green and low-carbon, LNG, as a popular new energy source, has long become the focus of the industry. The successful practice of ship-to-ship LNG bunkering at the factory is a vivid practice of the implementation of the “One Body and Two Wings” development strategy of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai).

COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) stated that it will take this breakthrough as a new starting point. Relying on the industrial cluster advantages of Changxing Island Marine Equipment Island construction, it will accelerate the layout of repair markets for new power vessels using methanol, LNG, ammonia fuel, etc. The company will tackle core processes such as new fuel storage, bunkering, and system maintenance, continuously lead the green technological transformation of the industry, and strive to build a green, low-carbon, and intelligent ship and marine engineering repair and modification flagship factory.
