Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Signs Contract for Eight 9200 TEU Methanol Dual Fuel Powered Containter ships

On September 27, CSSC Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and European liner company officially signed a construction contract for eight 9,200 TEU methanol dual-fuel medium-sized container ships.

So far, this batch order for this vessel type is the world’s largest , and it is also the first time for Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding to step into the market of methanol dual-fuel vessels. This ship type will become another container ship batch type after 7000TEU medium-sized container ship, which demonstrates the company’s management strategy, construction strength and brand advantage of carrying out batch ship to the end.

The vessel has an overall length of 299.9m, a beam of 45.6m, a capacity of 9,200 TEU, and is classed by BV. It adopts methanol as the main fuel, which reduces the emission of various pollutants from the fuel source and meets the requirements of the third stage of the EEDI. It can strongly guarantee that the CII is in the leading level, which is a high-quality ship model that combines powerful loading efficiency and efficient operation performance, and meets the demand of green, low-carbon and environmental protection. Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding optimizes the ship type from various dimensions such as aerodynamics, thermal energy management, energy distribution, ventilation flow field, lashing bridge type, etc. The ship type not only has a large loading capacity and low fuel consumption at speed, but also the average power based on the operating profile is lower than similar ship types, which is advantageous in terms of economic and high efficiency, large loading capacity, and low fuel consumption of a single box.

Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding is an innovative leader in the field of China’s private shipbuilding, especially in the field of ultra-large and medium-sized container ships. In 2013, it successfully undertook three 18,000 TEU ultra-large container ships, followed by a batch of 20,000 TEU ultra-large container ships, which brought China’s container ship building capacity from 10,000 TEU to the world club of 20,000 TEU ultra-large class. Its construction quality and speed for the domestic shipyards set a benchmark, and become China’s shipbuilding enterprises to enter the market of ultra-large container ship pioneer. In 2021, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding successfully entered the market of 7000TEU medium-sized container vessels, and has received orders for 34 vessels so far, ranking first in the world. The success of the construction project of eight 9200 TEU methanol dual-fuel medium-sized container ships has once again proved the strong market and brand influence of Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding.

In recent years, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding has been focusing on the strategy of ” Meet the Demand, Layout in Advance, Lead the Market”, focusing on the research and reserve of green decarbonization technology, continuously increasing the development of batch ship types for niche markets, and pushing forward the transformation, iteration and upgrading of the products, which has significant results.

Currently, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding ranks the top ten shipbuilders in the world in terms of hand-held orders and its ship schedule is also more abundant. Besides the first domestic large cruise ship to be delivered soon, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding also has domestic large cruise ship No. 2, the world’s original “general-purpose” offshore floating production FPSO, as well as 9,000 PCTC, 7,000 TEU medium-sized container ships, Aframax oil tankers, Capesize and Newcastle-type bulk carrier, etc.
