On July 31, Beihai Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), and COSCO Shipping Bulk officially entered into a contract for the construction of a series of bulk carriers. With this development, Beihai Shipbuilding’s orderbook has surpassed the milestone of 100 vessels, totaling over 23 million deadweight tons (DWT), with delivery schedules for some orders extending as far as 2030.
Currently, green vessels account for over 80% of Beihai Shipbuilding’s order book. The company has established a comprehensive, tiered portfolio of green-fueled vessel designs, creating a multi-pathway development landscape that encompasses LNG, methanol, ethanol, and ammonia dual-fuel technologies, as well as methanol/ethanol tri-fuel capabilities, thereby ensuring full coverage of green solutions across its flagship vessel models.
Beihai Shipbuilding was originally established in 1898, serving as a direct participant in, witness to, and driving force behind China’s modern shipbuilding industry. Over the past century, the company has evolved from a ship repair facility into a medium-sized repair yard for engineering vessels, eventually rising to become a key shipbuilding and repair enterprise under the CSSC.
In 2004, Beihai Shipbuilding relocated its entire operations from Yan’er Island to Haixi Bay, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the serial construction of large vessels. To date, the company has built and delivered a wide range of ships and offshore engineering products, including large bulk carriers, Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs), Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), large container ships, aquaculture vessels, and Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) units.
Currently, Beihai Shipbuilding firmly holds the top global position for VLOC deliveries, and its order book for large bulk carriers ranks among the best in the world.
