The $442 million modernization project for Dry Dock No. 3 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) has officially begun. The dry dock, which opened in 1908, was used to repair battleships during World War I.

This renovation marks the largest upgrade in the history of Dry Dock No. 3 at the U.S. Norfolk Naval Shipyard, aimed at improving the maintenance efficiency and operational reliability of Virginia-class submarines. The renovation includes: constructing a new watertight caisson foundation; refurbishing the dock floor and walls; upgrading the water control pump station system; and replacing the dock’s lifting equipment.
It is reported that the renovation of Dry Dock No. 3 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard is expected to be completed in 2031. Upon completion, the shipyard will have three modern dry docks, with Dry Dock No. 8 capable of handling maintenance work on Ford-class aircraft carriers.
