Thenamaris Orders Four 50,000 DWT MR2 Product Tankers from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries

Greek shipbroking sources report that Thenamaris, a Greek shipping company owned by Nikolas Martinos, has ordered four 50,000 DWT MR2 product tankers from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The new vessels will be equipped with scrubbers, with each ship costing approximately $53 million, for a total value of about $212 million. Delivery of all vessels is expected to be completed by 2028.

According to reports, the four MR2 product tankers announced this time follow orders placed with Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. Given the delivery schedule, it is highly likely that the new vessels contracted by the South Korean shipyard are not part of a recently signed order. Furthermore, the fact that the delivery dates for the shipbuilding contracts recently disclosed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries are all set for 2029 indirectly confirms this.

In November 2025, Thenamaris announced an order with Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding for two 158,000 DWT Suezmax tankers, with each vessel costing approximately $81 million. Delivery is expected in the fourth quarter of 2027, and the newbuilds will be equipped with scrubbers. The order from Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding marks the Greek shipowner’s first foray into the newbuild market for crude oil tankers in over a decade.

In addition to expanding its presence in the tanker market, in April 2026, Thenamaris placed an order with Jiangnan Shipyard for two 90,000 m³ liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuel Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs), which are scheduled for delivery in 2029. This marks the first collaboration between the two companies in the newbuild market.

Four new ships of two types from Jiangnan Shipyard and Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding have been added to Thenamaris’ fleet list on its official website.

Thenamaris currently operates a diversified fleet encompassing tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, and gas carriers, including 64 tankers, 24 bulk carriers, 7 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, 6 LPG carriers, and 2 container ships. The shipowner has been updating and expanding its product tanker fleet in recent years and will receive two MR2 product tankers built by New Yangzi Shipbuilding in 2025.
